I couldn't wait to leave for New York tomorrow. Since ending things with Amber last week, things haven’t been going so well. She showed up at our celebration and caused a huge scene. She has shown up at a few of our last gigs too. She behaved herself for the most part, but her presence there was still uncomfortable; being thousands of miles away from her would not happen soon enough.
I was going through my condo, making sure I had taken care of everything I needed to before I left. All of my bills were paid and I had made arrangements for a friend to come check on the place every couple of weeks. My bags were packed and I was pretty much just waiting to board the plane in the morning and start this adventure I’d waited my whole life for.
I was going through a stack of papers by the phone when I ran across my buddy’s business card. I totally forgot he lived in New York now. I should give him a call and let him know I was coming. Maybe we could get together for a drink or he could come to a show. We had some wild and crazy times together back in the day. It would be fun to relive them and see what other trouble we could get into.
I was about to dial his cell number when my phone rang. It was Matt.
“What’s up?” I answered and slipped the card into my wallet. I would call him when I was in town.
“Nothing, just checking in. Are you all ready to hit the road tomorrow?”
“All packed and everything is taken care of here. I’m ready to go,” I said, looking around my condo. It was cleaner than it had been in a long time and my suitcases were by the front door.
“Do you want to walk down to the bar and have a few? I don’t think I’m going to be able to sleep.”
I looked at the clock. It was already ten and our flight leaves at eight. I should get some sleep, but I probably wouldn’t be able to, either. A drink sounded like a very good idea.
“That sounds good,” I replied. “I’ll see you in five.”
“See ya then,” he said before hanging up.
I checked my appearance in the mirror before heading out. I was no spring chicken, but I could hold my own with the ladies. Before Erika, I had the pick of my fair share of women. I never wanted to tie myself down to one woman, but she made me realize it wouldn’t be so bad if she was the right one.
Things were going to be busy in New York, so there would probably be no time to find women, but if one came along, I was going to keep myself open to the possibilities.
I walked over to Matt’s in the warm night air. I was looking forward to New York, but I was going to miss Miami. We were supposed to be there over the winter and I wasn’t thrilled about that.
